Hayes Valley has blossomed in recent years with the removal of an unsightly freeway overpass following the 1989 earthquake and the subsequent development of the Octavia Boulevard promenade. The Hayes Street commercial district offers one-of-a-kind boutiques, galleries, trendy hair salons, restaurants and a yoga studio. Hayes Valley has many new condos, some starting at $750,000, along with older homes on quiet, alley-like streets. The adjacent Upper Market area is an emerging neighborhood in its own right, with new destination restaurants and cafés and new condo developments. Hayes Valley is a centrally located and walkable neighborhood, and hopping on a MUNI bus or subway is easy. The symphony and opera are within walking distance, too.
